RI outlasted HCI to top their group in A Division Quarter Finals
Excitement and anticipation filled the air as both RIJC and HCI netballers took the court on Wednesday, 16th May at Republic Poly.
It was definitely a match worth waiting for as the games that were played so far has been very much a one-sided game. HCI went in with their usual lineup while RIJC used their pair of moving shooters and both teams were neck to neck as they challenged each pass, run and shot. Although there were mistakes made on both sides, no one seemed to be able to gain a clear advantage and the quarter ended with 12-12.
In the 2nd quarter, RIJC begin to force mistakes from HCI and made some interceptions from both the center third and HCI shooter. This gave RI a 7 point lead with 22-15 but it was short lived as HCI fought back and close the gap to 20-23 by the end of the 2nd quarter.
Down by 3 points, HCI went in and took back control of the game to draw at 26-26 and after that it was back to goal for goal. RI managed to again create a 2 point lead which was quickly eroded away by errant passes and the 3rd quarter went over to HCI leading by 2 points with 36-34.
At the start of the 4th quarter, RI changed their goal shooter and equalized the game at 36-36 and then began to show great composure. As a team, you can sense that there was something different and RI started to slowly dominate the game and the score began to pull away. The lead was increased by RI wing defense and keeper. Both were relentless and extremely focused. They took back precious possessions which was converted and the whistle ended the game at 50-44 to RIJC. A special mention must go to RI center who played all 4 quarters with flair and control which gave RI the edge over HCI.
It was an extremely close match and both teams fought hard and was indeed a spectacle to watch!
In the following game, SAJC chased ACJC for 3 hard quarters of the game and was down by 6 goals at the end of the 3rd quarter. However, SAJC lost focus in the 4th quarter and allowed numerous center pass to be taken away by ACJC resulting in an overall lost of 21 goals ending the game to ACJC with 30-51.
RV and NYJC played their final game of the season
Republic Poly 2.30pm
RV game a stellar 1st quarter performance against last year’s A Division champions, ACJC by a 4 goal deficit ending the quarter at 8-12. RV may still yet have a shot for National Top 4 if they can maintain this level of play against ACJC. Their hopes were dashed in the subsequent quarter when ACJC shot in a whooping 28 goals against RV while they only managed to put in 5. ACJC’s initial sluggishness and uncertain moves in the goal circle totally disappeared from the moment they stepped back on court in the 2nd quarter. With the score at 40-13, RV continued to put up a brave fight in the 3rd and 4th quarter scoring 7 and 9 goals respectively as balls were able to reach their tall goal shooter and some long range shots from the goal attack. ACJC’s smooth game play and relentless defense brought them another 20 goals in the 3rd quarter and 24 goals in the 4th quarter. The game ended with 84-29 to ACJC, a most impressive score line.
RV overcame NUS High with the score of 62-40 on 11th May, Friday at 1pm.
In the earlier match, RIJC close the last game for NYJC with 61-16. RI opened the match with very strong performance from the Wing Defense and Goal Keeper who were extremely agile and intercepted numerous passes from NYJC. On the attacking side, quick movements and decisive passes were the hallmarks of RIJC and they took a 10 goal lead from NYJC in the 1st quarter with 14-4. Although NYJC has 2 tall shooters but they were outmatched and out-muscled by RIJC’s pair of defenders. RIJC also got some easy pass into the goal circle to their goal shooter when NYJC’s goal keeper was busy with stopping the runs made by RIJC’s mid-fielders. The game continued with NYJC making 4 goals for their subsequent quarters while RIJC hammered in 18 goals in the 2nd, 16 goals in the 3rd and 13 goals in the 4th quarter. Both teams made changes in the 3rd and 4th quarter.

SAJC secures a place in the semi-finals with their 2nd win against NUS High
After their first win against RVH in the opening game for A Division Netball Quarter-finals, SAJC conquered their subsequent opponent NUS High with the score of 77-19. This would also mean that NUS High will most likely miss semi-finals as they have also lost their previous game to ACJC with the score of 79-11.
In the first quarter of the match, SAJC set up their defense early against NUS High and created several turnovers through denying passes to NUS goal attack. Although SAJC missed some easy shots early in the quarter but it was mostly recovered back by their own attackers and made it back to the shooters’ hands for a goal. SAJC goal keeper also made some interceptions which stopped NUS from lobbing to their tall goal shooter. Mid-way through the 1st quarter, NUS goal keeper sustained a sprained ankle but continued to press on through the quarter which ended at 19-7 to SAJC.
In the 2nd quarter, SAJC made a change in their defense while NUS High also a change to their wing defense. In this quarter, SAJC’s defense seemed to function even better and kept NUS to scoring only 3 goals while their momentum increased and put in a total of 21 goals. Kudos to NUS goal keeper who kept herself in the game though having a bad ankle. This made things slightly easier for SAJC shooters in the goal circle . Quarter ended with 40-10.
NUS High switched the goal attack to center position and substitute in a new goal attack in the 3rd quarter. The change had very little effect as NUS continued to be caged in by SAJC’s defense and scoring only 5 in the quarter and another 4 in the last quarter of the game. SAJC changed both their center and wing attack position and also goal defense in the 3rd quarter and scored in 19 goals and made another change in the defense, center position and goal shooter in the 4th quarter and bombarded the last quarter with 18 goals.
A Division Quarter Finals: SAJC explodes past RV
In the first game of A Division Netball Quarter-finals at Republic Poly, SAJC exploded past RVH in the first quarter with the score of 16-5. SAJC was able to contain most of RV’s passes outside the goal circle and minimizing their passes to their tall GS. At the same time, RV also made several errors and SAJC was able to pick those up and convert them. This continued in the 2nd quarter with RV defenders trying to deny SAJC shooters from going into the goal circle by blocking them out. This only managed to slow down SAJC’s attacking but the quarter still ended in SAJC’s favor with the score of 31-8. SAJC then made several line up changes in the 3rd and 4th quarter and the score was 44-15 and then 57-20 respectively.
RV now faces an uphill task as they will have to face NUS High and ACJC which they cannot afford to lose if they wish to progress into the semi-finals.
In the subsequent match, RIJC overcame TJC with 53-26.
AJC’s hope of quarter final dashed by lost to SAJC
On the last day of the preliminary round for A Division Netball 2012, AJC needs to win SAJC by 1 point in order to create a 3 way-tie between these 2 teams and TJC in order to qualify for quarter-finals. AJC’s previous 1 point defeat to TJC was a huge blow to their chance of quarter-finals and thus the only way to qualify was to win the game against SAJC.

The first quarter ended with SAJC taking a 3 point lead with 10-7. In the 2nd quarter, SAJC made some changes to their line up and continued to pull away from AJC slowly but AJC managed to keep the difference to only 7 points in the 2nd quarter which ended at 21-14. SAJC made further changes to the line up in the 3rd quarter and it seemed to made the difference in the defense as AJC was kept to scoring only 5 points in the 3rd quarter and the lead opened up to 11 points by the end of 3rd quarter with 30-19. AJC then put in their substitutes at the 4th quarter and SAJC took the game with 47-22. This ends AJC’s run in the A Division Netball 2012.
